What to Know Before Buying a Lacrosse Helmet

Every lacrosse helmet sold for organized play must be NOCSAE certified, and that certification is pass or fail, not a score. There is no published star rating for men’s lacrosse helmets, so treat any ranking you see, including ours, as a judgement about features and fit rather than a measured safety result.

What actually varies between helmets is fit, ventilation, weight and how much adjustment the shell gives you. Cascade’s R-series is the range we point most players at, with the CPV-R as the adult pick and the CS-R sized for players under 12.

On a budget, the honest advice is to buy the cheapest NOCSAE-certified helmet that genuinely fits, rather than a more expensive one that does not. A certified helmet is a certified helmet; the price buys comfort, weight and adjustability, not a higher safety grade.

Fit matters most. A premium helmet that fits poorly is less safe than a budget helmet that fits perfectly. Always try before you buy, or order from a retailer with free returns so you can compare fits.
