What to Know Before Buying a Lacrosse Helmet
All lacrosse helmets sold for organized play must meet NOCSAE standards. Beyond that, two metrics matter most: the STAR rating (Virginia Tech’s independent concussion risk testing) and the fit system.
The Cascade CS-R is the only lacrosse helmet to earn a 5-STAR STAR rating from Virginia Tech — the highest possible. If you can afford it, it’s the right answer for serious players.
For budget-conscious buyers, the STX Stallion 200 offers solid protection at a third of the price. It won’t fit as precisely as the CS-R, but it meets all safety requirements and is a good starting helmet for youth and recreational players.
Fit matters most. A premium helmet that fits poorly is less safe than a budget helmet that fits perfectly. Always try before you buy, or order from a retailer with free returns so you can compare fits.
