What Each Position Actually Needs
Attack & Midfield: Gloves, arm pads, shoulder pads, and helmet are required. Most attack players prefer low-profile shoulder pads for mobility. For arm pads, prioritize elbow coverage — that’s where you’ll take the most checks.
Defense: Same base requirements, but many defensemen prefer bulkier shoulder pads since physical play is expected. Rib pads are optional but popular at the collegiate level.
Goalies: Full separate set of equipment — goalie helmet with throat guard, goalie chest protector, goalie gloves, shin guards, and a cup. Field player equipment is NOT adequate for goalies.
When in doubt, buy one size up for shoulder pads and arm pads. Pads that are too small leave gaps in coverage; pads that are slightly too big are annoying but protective.
